The Music City Center grand opening is here and scheduled for May 19 and 20. The two-day grand opening activities include a star-studded Nashville lineup and free open house for the public. Join Mayor Karl Dean for a ‘Walk with the Mayor’ just prior to the center’s opening on Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 pm from the Walk of Fame Park to the entrance of the Music City Center where the mayor will open the doors to the public for the first time to preview the 1.2 million-square-foot convention center. “I invite all Nashvillians to be a part of this special weekend in our city’s history,” Mayor Dean said. “I’m especially pleased that the Nashville Symphony and the Songwriters Hall of Fame will be a part of the festivities. The diversity of music they represent is at the very heart of who we are as Music City and is a key reason we are so attractive to the visitor and convention industry.” The Nashville Symphony’s program on Sunday from 3-3:45 pm in the Grand Ballroom will be led by Associate Conductor Kelly Corcoran and includes the opening movement from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, a movement from Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful Scheherazade and the [...]

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Coalition of Black Veterans and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., proudly invites members of the House of Representatives, retired military Flag Officers, representatives of the Black veterans community, the press, and the public to join in commemorating the life of American soldier and military leader, Colonel Charles Young. Colonel Young had an exemplary career and was the highest-ranking Black commanding officer in the U.S. Army from 1894 until his death in 1922. “It is not an exaggeration of the facts to say that every Black Flag Officer from Brigadier General Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., to former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell owe their opportunity of advancement through the Flag Ranks to Colonel Charles Young,” said coalition Chair, Charles Blatcher III. “They reached their stars standing on his shoulders.” “Omega Psi Phi is honored to join in a program in recognition of Col. Young,” said Dr. Andrew Ray, Grand Basileus. “His life’s work thoroughly represents our four Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift. Col. Young met the many formidable challenges with courage and fortitude. He pressed on through life, not because of, but in spite of the never-ending challenges.” On Wednesday, June 5, [...]

The thousands of troops and military families who pass through Nashville International Airport (BNA) every year now have a new place to call home. Military leaders, the USO, and airport officials cut the ribbon recently on USO Nashville, officially opening the doors to the city’s first-ever USO Center. The grand opening of the center located at the junction of C and D concourses was marked by a flag ceremony and a performance by the USO Show Troupe. Hundreds of guests, including servicemen and women, council members, state representatives and those who helped make the center possible crowded the ticketing lobby at BNA to help celebrate the occasion. “USO is all about the little things, little things that often times mean a lot,” said USO President/CEO Sloan Gibson. “Every day inside this center countless little things will make life better for our troops and for their families. Little things will mean the world to a military mom looking for relief while traveling or for a soldier who is far from home for the first time.” “We are proud of all our armed services members, and the important role their spouses and family members play,” Mayor Karl Dean said. “This is the [...]

North Nashville has been the center of controversy for many in plans for economic and social redevelopment, especially as it pertains to historic Jefferson Street. Many African Americans feel that gentrification is taking place and that Blacks are being bought out and relocated. If this process continues, Jefferson Street as well as north Nashville will not reflect the diversity it should. It has the potential of becoming a middle and upper class predominately White community. Is the Black community supposed to be blind and not see that many of north Nashville’s economically disadvantaged single-run families are being relocated to Antioch and Hermitage? The adverse price for change sometimes comes off the back of those unwilling to advocate in their own best interest. Jefferson Street was historically the heart and pulse of the Black community in the vicinity of three historically Black universities. This historically rich and ideally located area is being compromised with little input from stakeholders in the area. Many undoubtedly see that as a slap in the face and a lack of respect for the feelings of the Black community. Nashville Blacks have no reason to apologize for the rich and proud heritage this area has afforded the [...]

African Americans have spent much of our history fighting for equal treatment. Just two generations ago, our parents and our grandparents were banned from eating at certain restaurants, attending certain schools, and working in certain professions. So it is not difficult to empathize with the struggle of immigrants in our country. Like our ancestors who migrated from the former slave states of the Deep South, millions of undocumented immigrants move to the United States each year to find work and a decent education for their children. But when they arrive, they are confronted with blatant discrimination and racial profiling with hardly any legal recourse and little public outrage. As people of color, we have a responsibility to stand up for social justice whenever it is violated. That is why the NAACP has joined other civil rights and human rights organizations, including the Rights Working Group and the Leadership Conference of Civil and Human Rights, to support comprehensive immigration reform. Across the country, an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants live in a permanent second-class status. Many immigrants come to the U.S. to find a better life, but find themselves living in the shadows, in constant fear of arrest and deportation. This [...]

This month many churches are celebrating Women’s Month. This focus on women is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate women in the church for their hard work. No one can deny that women are so important, critical to the work of God’s Kingdom. For this reason, we women need to take care of ourselves as we share our gifts with others to expand the work of Jesus Christ to those we encounter. This self-care involves women sticking together and nurturing one another. We need to be one-on-one with one another as we meet the challenges of motherhood, marriage, and ministry. It is a struggle sometimes to keep everything in check, including our personal needs. Jesus values every woman’s work and dedication to his Kingdom, as shown in his interactions with women. Many of us are familiar with the two sisters of the Bible, Mary and Martha. Both of these women were close to Jesus. We learn from them in Luke 10:38-42 that women need and can get close to Jesus. Jesus is interested in saving women and using women, just like he is interested in saving and using the other gender. Although many of our preachers our men, it does not [...]

We are built so that our spirit hungers for God. We are designed with a great capacity for God, but sin and our own individuality and wrong thinking keep us from getting to Him. God delivers us from sin, but we have to deliver ourselves from our individuality. “If the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed,” John 8:36. The greatest moment in our lives is when we decide that sin must die in us, not simply be restrained or suppressed, but crucified just as Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world. “Our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin,” Romans 6:6. We should take some time alone with God and make this important decision, saying: “Lord, identify me with your death until I know that sin is dead in me.” Until our independence is ‘broken,’ all the rest is religious fraud. “I have been crucified with Christ,” Galatians 2:20.
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:21-26) with 4 occurrence of ‘pistis/faith’. Something ‘more’ to the meaning of faith in this ‘thesis’ of Romans. As James Cone would say, “What then is ‘the more’?” ‘Righteousness of God’, found only in Paul— is THE NEW COVENANT. Righteousness. Indwelling of consciousness; eternal; principle; relationship. ‘True Knowledge’ of God’s creating, sustaining, and redeeming power. ‘This Covenant’ is ONLY ‘By Faith— ‘believe that’! When ‘This Knowledge’ comes, the whole world is turned upside down. Struggle [...]

B.B. King, the legendary ‘King of the Blues’ recently received the Urban League of Middle Tennessee’s Living Legend Award. Patricia Parrish Stokes, president/CEO of the Urban League of Middle Tennessee (ULMT) along with board member, Burley Nelson, had the privilege of presenting King with the award, following his memorable performance at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center on April 25. The Living Legend Award includes a copy of the ULMT commissioned artwork by local artist James Threalkill. “Making that presentation was a precious opportunity,” said Stokes. “He is truly someone worthy of a living legend award recognition.” Riley B. King began as a disc jockey in Memphis, where he was dubbed ‘The Beale Street Blues Boy.’ That nickname was shortened to ‘B.B.’ The guitarist cut his first record in 1949, and he spent the next few decades recording and touring, playing more than 300 shows a year. King has worked with musical artists from rock, pop and country backgrounds. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and he won his 14th Grammy Award in 2006. At age 87, King still continues to draw crowds whenever he plays. He still tours the world, giving more than 250 [...]

The four Tennessee Chapters of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women joined together to make a strong presence at the Tennessee General Assembly in mid-March. Members of the chapters spent two days on the Hill to meet with legislators and attend caucus sessions. They were presented on the floor in the House of Representatives by Speaker Pro Tempore Emeritus Lois DeBerry and warmly welcomed by all the members. There were also photo sessions with Gov. Bill Haslam, House Speaker Beth Harwell and the Legislative Black Caucus. “It was an honor for me to present these distinguished women on the floor of the House,” said Rep. DeBerry. “They serve the community in many ways, just as we do, and a strong developing relationship with those of us who serve in government is an effective way to address the needs of our citizens-particularly women and families.” Members presented Nashville (Veronica Marable Johnson, president), Knoxville (Deloris Mitchell, president), Chattanooga (Faith Edwards, president) and Memphis (Niki Barnes, president), along with members from each chapter. The coalition’s made a strong presence at the Capitol, which clearly revealed the relevance of the organizations, as well as the importance of women throughout the state, where women [...]

The Lion King is far and away the most fun you can have indoors thus summer. The spectacular and amazing production of Disney’s The Lion King is running through June 2 at TPAC in downtown Nashville. If you have never seen it before, if you have seen the animated movie, or even if you haven’t, this is a must-see for anyone with a heart. It’s the timeless story of a ruler whose evil brother covets his throne, combined with the coming-of-age, lost-in-the-world story of a youngster unaware of just how to go about fulfilling his destiny. It’s the love story of two destined to be together. It’s all merge perfectly in this thrilling and amusing presentation. Set in Africa, the cast is full of incredibly talented (mostly Black) cast members who bring this record-breaking global phenomenon to life in an unforgettable fashion. Disney’s The Lion King is in line to be Nashville’s best-loved musical following its record-breaking 2006 engagement. “The response and excitement we’ve received for the The Lion King’s return to Nashville has exceeded our expectations, and we’re excited to be raising the curtain again on this wonderful show,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC president and CEO. “Don’t miss your [...]

Rarely does a sequel really outdo the first film in a franchise, but the reboot of the Star Trek film franchise is seeking to echo the 1979 and 1982 films that began the big screen adventures of the crew of the starship Enterprise. Back then the first Star Trek: the Motion Picture was a rambling mess, and almost tanked the project to continue the voyages on-screen. But, learning from their mistakes, the producers borrowed from one of the best scripts and episodes of the original series, entitled Space Seed, and created a timeless masterpiece, one of the greatest movie sequels ever, the unforgettable Star Trek: the Wrath of Khan. Helping make Khan fantastic was the charisma of screen legend Ricardo Montalban in the role. Flash forward to the 21st century J.J. Abrams reboot of the 24th century story, and we find Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain of the piece. An inspired choice, as Cumberbatch has a legion of followers from his work as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock. His role as John Harrison will long be remembered as one of the most formidable foes ever created for a science –fiction film, and viewers will be thrilled to watch [...]

In conjunction with DEX Imaging & Mailing, the Nashville Predators Foundation recently presented $14,500 to area charities as part of the DEX Score & Win program, an annual initiative of rewarding goals and wins by the Nashville Predators while lending financial support to area charitable and community service organizations. For the eighth season, DEX Imaging & Mailing, official corporate partner of the Nashville Predators and Bridgestone Arena, joined forces with the Predators Foundation to reward every goal scored and every win recorded by a Predators’ goaltender through the regular season with a donation to a designated Nashville-area charity. Including this season the program has now generated more than $220,000 to area charitable and community service organizations. Players were randomly paired with one of 10 Nashville area charitable or community service organizations; for every goal scored by a forward or win recorded by a goaltender, DEX contributed $100. The contribution was $150 for goals scored by a defenseman and a $200 bonus was awarded for hat tricks and shutouts. Recipients for the 2012-13 season were: Boy Scouts of America, Md. TN Council, Christian Community Services, Education Equal Opportunity Group, Lifecare Family Services, Lighthouse Christian School, Nashville Children’s Theatre, Pearl Point Cancer [...]

“Shifting the Atmosphere” was the theme for the Creative Arts Showcase on May 4th. And, that’s exactly what happened (the atmosphere was shifted into one of praise and worship) at Manna From Heaven Dinner House, 3510 West Hamilton Avenue, when the Kairos Kreative Ministries invited many other talented ministries to join them in a showcase that featured liturgical dance, praise dance, and mime through dramatic interpretations of gospel songs. There was also a Christian hip hop song performed by Larissa Warner. She performed a special hip hop “go getter” music, “Let ‘Em Come Uh Huh” inspired by Shadrack, Meshack and Abindigo. Kairos Kreative Ministries is a community-based ministry-centered arts company who seeks to restore the importance and purpose of this form of ministry by serving as a resource for churches and communities. This ministry performs through praise and liturgical dance, mime and drama. “As ministries of the word, we wish to share the often unbeknowist biblical principles for ministry through creative arts thus educating , inspiring, and empowering others to use their gifts for the honor and glory of God,” as stated in their mission. With great performances by all groups and lots of energy, emcee Damon King from 102.1 [...]

The Trafficking In America Conferences aren’t just annual gatherings of people that come and go. They are designed to educate the general public about at-risk youth, and to mobilize and engage people across America to help turn this horrendous crime of human trafficking around. The human trafficking conference team gives great thought to topics that will help make an impact in the lives of those attending. The 2013 Conference offers a slate of speakers this year to increase awareness and give attendees the practical tools they need to make a difference and save lives. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, human trafficking has become the second fastest growing criminal industry (just behind drug trafficking) with children accounting for roughly half of all victims, as reported by USA Today. The 2013 Human Trafficking Conference from May 23-25 is open to anyone with an interest in becoming educated and made aware of the issue of human trafficking. Human trafficking affects the entire population—important to the general public, educators, military, legal professionals, law enforcement, social workers, youth, church leaders, travelers, parents, fathers, mothers, and medical professionals. It’s relevant to anyone wanting to become educated about the issues surrounding and fueling human trafficking. [...]

But in an unusual and unexpected move, the foundation assembled some of the grantees here recently to help heal the healers. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, a private, philanthropic organization, founded by breakfast cereal magnate, Will Keith Kellogg, crafted the America Healing Initiative to partner with community organizations working to address racial disparities in education, health, criminal justice, the economy and the media. The foundation hosted a diverse group of community organizers, civil rights leaders health care professionals and educators to build stronger networks and to focus on using effective storytelling to increase the visibility of their work on the national stage. “This year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming the Narrative’ comes on the heels of the re-election of our first African American president, movement towards comprehensive immigration reform and the Supreme Court’s decision to evaluate affirmative action policies at public colleges and universities,” said Gail Christopher vice president of program strategy for the W.K.
WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Social Security changes proposed by Obama could hurt African Americans more than other groups, a new report by the Center for Global Policy Solutions finds. In this fiscal year 2014 budget, President Obama proposes switching the way benefit programs such as Social Security and civil service retirement adjust for inflation to the chained consumer price index, or chained CPI. Chained CPI calculates inflation differently from the consumer price index, the current yardstick. The move would save approximately $230 billion, according to the president’s budget. “The chained CPI significantly reduces the purchasing power of those who rely on benefits issued by the federal government, and especially disadvantages retirees and the long-term disabled because it fails to take into account the higher costs they shoulder as a result of their increased need for health care services and related products,” the report reads. The Center for Global Policy Solutions report finds that the changes may cause particular harm to older African Americans; many depend on Social Security for the majority of their retirement income. Nearly half of African American beneficiaries rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income, compared to 35% of all beneficiaries. Two out of [...]
