Street Theatre Company announces their upcoming musical Baby by Sybille Pearson, Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire opening March 29. Babyis a pop-rock musical that tells the story of three couples on a university campus as they deal with the painful, rewarding, and agonizingly funny consequences of the universal experience of birth. The award winning musical about three couples expecting a child ran on Broadway from 1983-84.
There are the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they started.
The three expectant couples have different but familiar reactions. Lizzie and Danny are university juniors who have just moved in together. The athletic Pam and her husband, Nick, a sports instructor, have had some trouble conceiving. Arlene, already the mother of three grown daughters, is unsure of what to do, contemplating abortion while her husband Alan is thrilled with the thought of a new baby. Throughout the show, these characters experience the emotional stresses and triumphs, the desperate lows and the comic highs, that accompany the anticipation and arrival of a baby.
A smart, energetic show with loads of charm, Baby has a modern, up-to-date sensibility, hysterically insightful dialogue and a tuneful, contemporary score of show-stopping numbers by Shire and Maltby (Starting Here, Starting Now, Closer Than Ever and Big, the Musical). Street Theatre Company is supported by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the Tennessee Arts Commission. Baby runs March 29-April 14 with shows Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 5 pm. Last weekend for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Keeton Theatre
This is the last weekend to catch Dirty Rotten Scoundrelsat the Larry Keeton Theatre at the FityForward Senior Center in Donelson.
Based on the popular 1988 film starring Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels runs through March 16. Tickets include dinner and show. The menu for this show is garden salad, chicken Alfredo, broccoli, garlic toast and German chocolate cake. Shows for this weekend include Friday and Saturday, with dinner at 6 pm and show at 7 pm.
