Food, fun abound at Southern Women’s Show

Celebrating unique cuisine, this year’s Southern Women’s Show is bringing all the delicious reasons to love the South back to Nashville. The Nashville Convention Center is hosting the four-day festival of food, fun and fashion—also boasting celebrity guests.

Cooking has experienced a revival over the past few years, with cities like Nashville returning to the more traditional ways of preparing the region’s time-honored cuisine, while at the same time adding distinctive, inventive spins to southern classics. Audiences will find this and more at the 2013 Southern Women’s Show in April, as they get a taste of all the gastronomic goodness that the south has to offer, both new and old.

Nick Pellegrino, a long time musician, songwriter and manager rang in New Year’s in 2011 when an idea popped in his head.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have a restaurant where there was no menu, it was family style and you paid one price, and it was like coming to my house for dinner?” said Pellegrino.

And thus an outright phenomenon was born: Mangia Nashville. Nick will share some of his authentic New York–style Italian family recipes at this year’s show.

Aimee Jackson Fortney is, ‘Not the Perfect Cook’ who appears regularly on WSMV Channel 4 News and More at Midday. Aimee is a cookbook author, recipe developer, food writer and motivational speaker. Her goal is to keep families out of the drive thru by cooking easy, healthy meals at home, on a budget.

Chef Paul Owens’ passion for cooking led him to culinary school and then to chef/owner of two restaurants before becoming the executive chef for the French Lick Resort. As a parent of seven children, he knows how to balance flavors and prepare dishes that the whole family will enjoy.

Local 140 Firefighters return to heat up the cooking stage with their firehouse chili and big breakfast recipes sure to satisfy the man in your house.

Tammy Algood, spokesperson for ‘Pick Tennessee Products,’ knows about farm to table recipes. She authored the book Farm Fresh Southern Cooking: Straight from the Garden to Your Dinner Table.

Linda Carman has a made a career of baking biscuits and cornbread. Her mother’s good Southern cooking is her inspiration. As the spokesperson for Martha White, she has complied three cookbooks.

Heart disease continues to be the number one killer of women in the United States. There are preventive steps that you can take by practicing healthy lifestyle habits that can begin in the kitchen. Kitty Fawaz and Jonathan Wickersham from Saint Thomas Healthcare will share heart healthy recipes that are delicious and will put you on the track to healthier eating.

These chefs and food mavens from Nashville and around the country will appear daily on the Mix 92.9 Cooking Stage.  Others include: Matt Simons, executive chef at Hilton Nashville Downtown; Juanita Lane from Dulce Desserts; Chris Mason from Provence Breads and Café; Chef Rodney Amos from Rock Bottom/Big River Grill and Brewery; Sylvia Harrellson from Green Door Gourmet; Thomas Cook, executive chef at Union Station Hotel; and many others.

This year’s guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy the Glory Foods’ exhibit. A staple in Southern heat-and-serve products, Glory Foods will have free samples, cooking tips, recipes, and chefs in action on the Cooking Stage. Other staple food sampling exhibits will include Blue Ribbon Foods, Mrs. Grissom’s Salads, Nonni’s Biscotti, Milo’s Tea and Blue Bell Creameries.
