Recently I heard a post-game interview from a high school student, Apollos Hester, who scored the winning touchdown for his team. He talked about how the team had started out slow in the first half, and that was okay, but they were determined to finish fast and hard. With enthusiasm, he talked about how his coach encouraged the team. He went on to say: “When you truly believe that you’re going to be successful, regardless of the situation, regardless of the scoreboard, you’re going to be successful.” Then he concluded with these remarks: “It’s a mindset. You can do anything that you put your mind to. Never give up on your dreams. Keep smiling, no matter what you’re going through. If you fall down, just get up. If you can’t get up, your friends are there to help you up. Your momma’s there; your daddy’s there; God’s there—hey, I’m there to help you up. You’re there. It’s going to be alright. Keep smiling, man.”

What I relearned from Apollos’ comments is that it is all about attitude. He listened to Philippians 2:4: “Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” Whatever we go through in this life or whatever dreams we want to fulfill in this life, our attitude will determine whether me make it through or accomplish our goals. Our problems in this life have nothing to do with money, people, or any other resources that we think we lack. Our issue is with our attitude. It’s all about our mindset.

Some of us, including Christians, have very negative, self-defeating attitudes that have taken us nowhere—except round and round on a hamster wheel. A good attitude can help win the game, no matter what the scoreboard says.

So many times we allow what others have said and how the circumstances look to keep us from living out our dreams or healing from some deep hurt, or facing our own mortality. If we want to win, we have to have a winning attitude. If we want others to see how beautiful we are or to live not caring what other people think about our looks, we have to have a good attitude about our own appearance. If we want to have a best-selling novel, we have to have the attitude that it is worth buying.

God does not want us walking around with a bad attitude, always complaining, finding something wrong with everything, giving up, walking around in fear, or walking around with our noses in the air.

We need to get rid of these attitudes. God reminds us daily that he is there with us to get us through and to see us through the impossible situations. If the scoreboard leaves us one-point short, it will not matter at the end of the day, because we have a good attitude. God will be there to help lift us up.

It is all about attitude. Attitude will win the game. Attitude will sell the book. Attitude will make someone hire a person who is not qualified for the job. Attitude will make your enemies your footstool. Attitude will take you to places you never thought you could ever go.

When we think about Jesus, we have a good attitude. His attitude saved the world. So there is no need to walk around with an attitude problem.

Just keep smiling and be grateful, because everything is going to be all right.
