FISK University has big weekend

The weekend beginning Wednesday, April 8, will be huge for Fisk University. There are lots of activities planned for students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and potential students of the historic university.

The 17th annual Fisk University Research Symposium will be held on Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9, in the Appleton Room of Jubilee Hall. The objective of the symposium is to promote research and inter-disciplinary collaboration. The symposium provides an opportunity for students and faculty to share the results of their recent research efforts with their peers and the university community. The Fisk annual Honors Convocation is Thursday, April 9, at 1 pm, in the Fisk Memorial Chapel. A reception will follow in the Franklin Library. Scholarship donors, alumni and friends are invited to attend.

The President’s second annual Scholarship Benefit will be held on Friday, April 10, at 6 pm. You are cordially invited to attend, at OZ, 6172 Cockrill Bend Circle, Nashville, Tennessee 37209. Dress as your favorite character from the Wizard of Oz or The Wiz, or come in business attire. Order your ticket, take out a sponsorship, or make a donation. Single tickets are $100 per person ($70 of which is tax-deductible). Live Music featuring 764 Recording Artist Joy Styles and Nashville’s own Half Brass Band will be part of the festivities. Scholars Weekend and Registration Day run April 9-11. Scholars’ Weekend is an opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors to be a Fiskite for a day. Seniors that have paid the Fall 2015 admissions deposit will also be able to register for classes. For more information, contact Dean Loretta McDonald at .

The Fisk University 86th annual Spring Arts Festival runs Thursday, April 9 through Sunday, April 12. ‘The Arts: The Banner of Fisk University’ is this year’s theme. Thursday, April 9, the Student Art Show opens at 10 am in the Aaron Douglas Gallery; an Art Talk/Guest Artist event follows at 3 pm in the Carl Van Vechten Gallery; lunch on the yard with an open microphone is also that day. The Fisk Stagecrafters’ Musical production of Godspell is at 7 pm, Thursday and Friday, with a Saturday 3 pm matinee in the Little Theatre.

Saturday, April 11, the Fisk Jubilee Singers Concert is at 7 pm in the Chapel, with a Reception in the Appleton Room immediately following. At midnight, a Poetry Slam with special guests will be in the Sub Shop. Sunday, April 12, Chapel Service is at 10 am; Opera Workshop at 3 pm in the Little Theatre; and the Fisk for Fisk Concert is at 7 pm in the Chapel, with a Reception in Cravath Hall, 1st Floor Rotunda, featuring Kim Fleming, Maritri Garrett, Shonka Dukureh, Jordan Holland, Eric Copeland, and others.
