Freedom School reading program is free

by Wanda Clay

This summer students in grades K-8 will be attending a summer reading program, the Freedom School, that will run from June 15-July 24.

Freedom School is a free six-week, weekday summer literacy program designed to get children to read better, comprehend more, develop good social skills and take pride in themselves, their families and their communities.

The Freedom School was created by the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, D.C., which serves more than 12,000 people across the nation each summer.

The program includes free tuition, books, meals, field trips, music, art and drama. “We invite parents to hang out with us this summer in a safe, nurturing environment,” said a previous host from Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church.

The Freedom School for summer 2015 will be hosted at Clark Memorial United Methodist Church, 1014 14th Ave. N., for children in grades K-4.

For the second year, grades K-8 will be at Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church, 2334 Herman Street. For more information or for an application, call 615-497-1398 or e-mail <nashvillefreedomeschools@gmail.com>.

Clark hosts literacy summer program

by Wanda Clay

Clark Memorial United Methodist Church will sponsor a Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School from June 15th – July 24th for children in grades K-4.

Space is limited to a total of 50 kids. The goal of this program is to provide a free summer reading program for children who need additional help in Reading and Language Arts.

“Literacy is the gateway skill that students need to be successful in school,” stated a teacher that will participate in the program. “This will be achieved by bringing together support from Nashville businesses, colleges, universities, public schools, faith-based organizations and people who care about Nashville’s children and their families,” said organizers.

Members, friends and relatives are encouraged to participate in this program.

For more information, to volunteer or register for participation at Clark, contact G. Houston, Program Director at 615-397-4997 or email lgj632009@hotmail.com.
