The Sporting Life: Marvel-ous May Edition

by Cass Teague

The merry, merry month of May is just marvelous this year. It started with a boom as Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron exploded onto the summer movie scene with the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2012’s sensational Marvel’s The Avengers. Ultron has already pulled in over $932 million worldwide as I write this, and will prolly have earned a billion by the time you read it. Not only that, it was bookended by the best show on broadcast television, ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Kick yourself if you’re not watching, and missed how once again the tv show led right into a major motion picture and picked up the next week without missing a beat, like they did last April with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. OBTW: Winter Soldier pulled in over $700 million worldwide box office.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a thrilling joyride through a post-apocalyptic nightmare. At first, sitting and watching it, I was bored and hated it, but when I realized it was ultimately a female empowerment piece, let go of my anti-Nicholas Hoult feelings, and appreciated the film’s version of the Sand Sisters, also realizing it was designed for the Call of Duty generation, I came to understand why it was rated 99% [the highest I have ever heard of] on Rotten Tomatoes. See them both at your local Carmike Cinema soon.

May also brings the return of JABEcon to idyllic Lebanon, Tennessee. On May 23rd, 2015 the crew will host the fourth annual Japan, Animation, Books, and Entertainment Convention (JABEcon). The one-day event will take place at Cumberland University’s Labry Hall; doors open at 9 am and close promptly at 9 pm. Last year’s event, JABEcon Fortnight, was held at Cumberland University’s Learning and Career Commons. They had over 300 attendees come out for 20 hours of programming, with guests Chuck Huber (Dr. Stein from Soul Eater, Android 17 from DBZ), cosplayers Vedetta Marie and Josh Patterson, and ScatterDOT Fashion.

Come join guests Jennifer Cihi (singing voice of Sailor Moon), cosplayers Cheshire and Josh Patterson along with another 20 hours of cool programming, a $300 grand prize Cosplay contest from Euphoria Cosplay Studios, games, prizes and much more all shoved into one lovely day. JABEcon is a full day of anime, fun, and entertainment that should not be missed! Get more info at www.jabecon.com

JABEcon was started by an entertainment media group at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN called Entertainment Art Organization. The group is designed to promote the interest of the art inside entertainment and foster local discussion. JABEcon is a yearly collection of panels, workshops, and guests all in various fields of entertainment art and the culture of its creation with a focus on community building. See you at JABEcon!
