The vibe in the building was electric this past Tuesday night at Marathon Music Works downtown. Raekwon and Ghostface Killah brought the ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ tour to Nashville. The crowd was eager to celebrate 20 years of the album that has affectionately come to be known as The Purple Tape.
From beginning to end, the whole building was rocking.
Dillon Cooper, out of Brooklyn, N.Y., held his own as the opening act, warming up the audience for the insane Wu-Tang apparel wearing crazies. Raekwon and Ghostface wasted no time right out of the gate, bringing it raw. Of course they performed classic hits ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘Glaciers of Ice.’ If that wasn’t indication enough that they were serious, the duo followed with ‘Ice Water’ and ‘Guillotine’—tunes that aren’t familiar to most, only the die-hard fans, which included almost everyone in the building. The fans didn’t miss a beat, reciting the lyrics line for line as if they’d written the songs themselves. They even did a short dedication to their fallen brother Ol’ Dirty Bastard. It included his songs ‘Got Your Money’ and ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya.’
Nashville’s own Young Buck was in attendance, performing a quick throwback song from his debut album. The Wu-Tang brothers closed out with ‘Triumph’ from the Wu-Tang Forever album. The Wu-Tang duo spread the love all around the building. From shout outs to bringing patrons on stage, signing vinyl records to t-shirts, taking pictures—the two definitely make it their business to keep fans satisfied.
“They rock bro,” shouted a slightly intoxicated gentleman.
