The New Covenant Christian Church (NCCC)’s annual CommUnity Day was an amazing success, and countless people were helped—both in the ministry area and from all over Nashville. The lines for ‘record expungement’ and ‘voter registration’ were phenomenal as literally hundreds of individuals braved the scorching humidity and hot temperatures to change their lives for themselves and the community at large.
Judge Rachel Bell and her judicial team tirelessly worked long hours after the event was over, addressing each expungement applicant’s paperwork for the best possible solutions.
For many it was a chance to get away and be uplifted by the outdoor concert, and to just have some good, clean, positive fun.
Services were available for those needing a fresh start, a job, records expunged, school supplies, groceries, their voting and general rights restored, a haircut, a mammogram, or even a pair of shoes—not to mention individuals needing access to resources such as HIV testing, MTA bus services, MDHA, services for victims of crimes, major Metro services, and more. There was something for everyone in attendance, including: games, hot dogs, snacks and treats, dancing and upbeat rhythm and blues or even to ‘get their praise on’ with gospel music.

Many children and adults alike got a kick out of the animal exhibition, especially the live snake demonstration. The introduction of a baby kangaroo and a giant turtle followed closely behind. The vendor’s onsite provided a wealth of information, signup sheets, literature and give-a ways with no two being the same. Both professional and nonprofit organizations were represented. The Nashville NAACP leadership took the necessary time and pride in signing up voters for voters registration. They reminded attendees to also become members (or update their memberships) and vote in the NAACP September elections.

All were invited and welcomed to the family on this community-oriented day. Each year the bar is set higher. As always, it proved to be an event where attendees cast their worries aside, and brought along the kids, grandparents, neighbors, family and friends. Chances are that those who brought others with them will be loved by that person even more.
