AARP met once again at the North Precinct on Wednesday, June 21, to celebrate the Founder’s Day of Meharry Area Chapter #2534.
The program began with a prayer and a pledge of allegiance from Financial Secretary Delores Lewis, followed by the ‘welcome’ and ‘chapter business’ led by current AARP President Rosalyn Anderson.
Ann Turner, who serves as the public relations representative, read the history of AARP Chapter #2534, reminding everyone of the progress that has transpired since its inception. There has been a plethora of beneficial information from AARP about safety, health and welfare.
“We are now continuing a journal of our achievements, categorizing our success and have made many plans for learning and instructive growth in the years to come,” said Dr. Ann Turner Brooks, public relations.
The chapter has received information through attending health care conferences, visiting nursing homes, talking to lawmakers and providing volunteer services. Some other accomplishments and activities include an annual financial contribution to Meharry Medical College and to the National Andrus Award.
This chapter was received by the National AARP organization on May 10, 1976. They began as a club called the ‘49ers’ and were later known as the Friendship Club at Meharry.
Mrs. Willa Taylor and Dorothy Webster were the catalysts in the founding of a committee after their appointment from Meharry President Dr. Lloyd C. Elam.
The Founder’s Day Celebration included entertainment from ‘Spoonman’ Lucious Talley, a delicious meal catered by Abrie Pillow-Nickerson and many door prizes.
Currently, the meetings continue to be held at the Bodenhamer North Nashville Police Precinct, 2231 26th Ave. N., every third Wednesday of each month (except August and December).
The meetings last one hour and lunch is provided. The motto is ‘To serve and not to be served.’ The colors are blue and white and national membership is required prior to joining a chapter.
The following list includes current members who have also served as past presidents: Willa Taylor, Thomas Ray, Rose Clinger, Vivian Ray, Ann Turner Brooks, Obi Badili and current President Rosalyn Anderson.
