Idris Elba stars in The Dark Tower.

The Dark Tower is a new film combining elements of the science fantasy, western, action, and horror film genres, directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel. The Dark Tower is marketed by Sony as a part of the Connected KINGdom franchise, which connects previous film adaptations by the author through The Dark Towers interdimensional setting. Currently the franchise is comprised of several Stephen King films, including The Shining (1980), Christine (1983), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Carrie (1976 & 2013) and It (1990 & 2017), with a reboot of the 1994 TV mini-series The Stand in early development. The new film is a continuation of Stephen King’s novel series of the same name.

The new film stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a gunslinger on a quest to protect the Dark Tower – a mythical structure which supports all realities – and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter o’Dim, the “Man in Black”. Intended to launch a new film and television franchise, this first installment combines elements from several novels in the eight-volume series, taking place partly in modern-day New York City and partly in Mid-World, Roland’s Old West-style parallel universe

In the film, Jake Chambers is an 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters a Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, who is on a quest to reach the “Dark Tower” that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save all existence from extinction by Hell. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter o’Dim, the Man in Black, hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.

The Dark Tower books tell the story of the fallen land of Mid-World through the eyes of Roland Deschain, a sort of frontiersman knight whose primary weapon is not a sword but a pair of revolvers. He’s on a quest to save his decaying world by reaching the tower that stands at the nexus point in time and space. The man in black – a devil who goes by many names, but mostly Walter Padick or Walter O’Dim – is an ageless deceiver and sorcerer who also seeks to reach the tower and rule over its seemingly infinite kingdoms. To complete his journey, Roland must call on help from our world, drawing a junkie named Eddie, an amputee named Susannah, and a young boy named Jake into his realm to be part of his ka-tet – the term for a group brought together by destiny.

The 95-minute film, rated PG-13, also features Claudia Kim as Arra Champignon, Fran Kranz as Pimli, Abbey Lee Kershaw as Tirana, Jackie Earle Haley as Sayre, Katheryn Winnick as Laurie Chambers, Dennis Haysbert as Roland’s father Steven Deschain, Michael Barbieri as Timmy, José Zúñiga as Dr. Hotchkiss, Alex McGregor as Susan Delgado, Nicholas Hamilton as Lucas Hanson, and De-Wet Nagel as Taheen Tech.
