Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, months after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat — the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, who are on the hunt for three Mother Boxes on Earth, whilst the world reflects on Superman’s death. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash — it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

This is the basic premise of the new DC Comics superhero film Justice League, with a long and twisted history getting to the screen. The Warner Bros. Pictures film is the fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), officially directed by Zack Snyder with a screenplay by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon, from a story by Terrio and Snyder. Joss Whedon did way more than a co-screenwriting credit would suggest. Snyder stepped down during post-production and Whedon took over to handle post-production duties in Snyder’s place, including directing additional scenes written by himself. The film also benefits from the departure of Hans Zimmer, as Danny Elfman scored the film. These two developments bode well for the success of the $300 million PG-13, 110 minute film, one of the most expensive films ever made. Justice League opens in 2D, 3D and IMAX on November 17, 2017.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, leader and benefactor of the group of meta-humans, a wealthy socialite and the owner of Wayne Enterprises, who also dedicates himself to protecting Gotham City from its criminal underworld as a highly trained, masked vigilante equipped with many powerful tools and weapons; Henry Cavill as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman, a Kryptonian survivor and journalist for the Daily Planet based in Metropolis who gains superhuman abilities under a yellow sun, who was presumed dead after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, an antiquities dealer and acquaintance of Wayne who is actually an immortal Amazonian warrior that is the crown princess of Themyscira and daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus, who possesses superhuman attributes and abilities inherited from her parents; Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash, a Central City university student, who can move at superhuman speeds with his ability to tap into the Speed Force; Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, the heir to the throne of the undersea nation of Atlantis, whose meta-human aquatic abilities and superhuman physical attributes originate from his Atlantean physiology; Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg, a former college athlete who, after being cybernetically reconstructed after a nearly fatal accident, has powers that allow him to manipulate technology and to turn his arms to cannons. Fisher portrays the character through the use of motion capture for the cybernetic portion of his body.

In addition to those superhero members of the Justice League, Amy Adams is Lois Lane, an undaunted and compassionate award-winning journalist for the Daily Planet and the love interest for Kent; Jeremy Irons is Alfred Pennyworth, Wayne’s butler, chief of security, and trusted confidant; Diane Lane is Martha Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive mother; Connie Nielsen is Hippolyta, Diana Prince’s mother and the Amazonian queen; J. K. Simmons is James Gordon, the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department and close ally of Batman; Ciarán Hinds is Steppenwolf, the alien military officer from Apokolips who leads an army of Parademons, charged by his nephew and superior officer Darkseid with finding the three Mother Boxes held on Earth. Joe Morton, Robin Wright and Jesse Eisenberg reprise their roles from previous films as Silas Stone, a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs and Victor Stone’s father; as Antiope, Hippolyta’s sister and Diana’s aunt and mentor; and as Lex Luthor, an eccentric young businessman, Superman’s indirect killer and hereditary CEO of LexCorp, respectively. Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Billy Crudup, and Kiersey Clemons portray the characters Nuidis Vulko, Mera, Henry Allen, and Iris West, respectively. Julian Lewis Jones portrays King Atlan, the king of Atlantis. Laurence Fishburne, who portrays Perry White in the DCEU, said he declined to reprise his role in this film due to scheduling conflicts.
