The winter installment of the Flying Solo series at the Nashville International Airport (BNA) opened on Dec. 3, and will run through Feb. 24, 2019. The exhibit is part of BNA’s Arts at the Airport program.
Each season, the Flying Solo series offers arts organizations and gifted local artists the opportunity to exhibit their work at BNA. The Winter 2018/2019 Flying Solo series artists include Teresa Hays, Vickie Vipperman, Wilson Lee Jr. and Ron Lowery. Additionally, the Frist Art Museum has an exhibit on Concourse A in the Community Art Cases.
Below is a brief description of each of the displaying artists and their work:

Concourses A & B Meeter-Greeter Lounge
Textile artist Teresa Hays has been dyeing, marbling, painting and printing fabric full-time since 1989. After maintaining a production-marbling studio for almost 30 years, Hays’ current studio work is focused on dyeing fabric. .
Vickie Vipperman is a weaver and dyer of contemporary textiles used primarily to construct clothing and accessories. She has a fine arts degree in fabric design from the University of Georgia and is a juried member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild and Piedmont Craftsmen .

Concourse C Meeter-Greeter Lounge
Wilson Lee, Jr. was born into a family of woodworkers in Greenville, Miss. His first steps as a child were toward a bowl of shellac in his father’s shop. The family, including his mother, brother, aunts and uncles, refinished and repaired antique furniture. After learning the steps to refinishing furniture, the art of woodcarving allowed for more creativity. Woodcarving was a way to comment on the world in which he lived. Lee started carving at age 12. The work grew up with him, in a changing world, during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. He wanted to capture the spirit of that time in his work. Each work became a statement on what was happening in the world around him .
Ron Lowery

Ron Lowery works from his art studio in the sky. Nothing excites him more than discovering and photographing unusual scenes and textures from above. Using a special airplane he and his son built, he has flown over 35 states to satisfy his passion for exploration and art. In 2003, tackling the greatest challenge of his life, he retraced the route of Lewis and Clark from the air. Flying 14,000 miles in his open-cockpit plane, he provided a new artistic perspective on the entire rugged country that the brave explorers discovered. Lowery, and his unusual flying lifestyle, have been profiled on PBS and by many national and international publications.
He continues to do talks and shows across the country, as well as flying and having adventures .

Concourse A near Gate A-2
Community Art Project and Performance: Nick Cave: Feat. Nashville The Concourse A art cases feature community art selections inspired by a Frist Art Museum exhibition, Nick Cave: Feat. Nashville, which showed at the Frist Nov. 10, 2017, to June 24, 2018. The exhibit featured work that explored themes of identity and social justice through a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, installation art, video and performance. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Chicago-based artist orchestrated a months-long community engagement project that culminated in public performances at the Schermerhorn Symp-hony Center .
The Flying Solo series is funded under an agreement with the state of Tennessee and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
