See (or sea, rather) Aquaman in theatres now

Jason Momoa and Amber Heard star in Aquaman.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime–one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king. Aquaman proves that DC is finally learning how to make good superhero movies like Marvel. I really found the film to be enthralling, with many familiar tropes and affectations.

Jason Momoa stars as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, a half-Atlantean / half-human who is reluctant to be king of the undersea nation of Atlantis. He has the ability to manipulate the tides of the ocean, communicate with other aquatic life, swim at supersonic speeds, and possesses superhuman strength. Amber Heard stars as Mera, a warrior and daughter of King Nereus, who may (or may not) become Arthur Curry’s love interest. She was raised by Queen Atlanna and groomed to become queen by marrying Arthur’s half-brother. Mera possesses hydrokinetic and telepathic powers that allow her to control her aquatic environment and communicate with other Atlanteans.

The film features Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, the Queen of Atlantis, mother of Arthur Curry and Orm; Patrick Wilson as Orm, Arthur Curry’s Atlantean half-brother and ruler of Atlantis, who seeks to unite the seven underwater kingdoms to declare war on the surface world out of the belief that humanity polluted the seas; Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Atlantis’ counselor and mentor of Arthur Curry as a youth; Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Mera’s father and the king of the Atlantean tribe of Xebel.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays the primary villain, Black Manta.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II portrays David Kane / Black Manta, a ruthless treasure hunter and a high-seas mercenary with a flair for creating deadly technological innovations; and Michael Beach portrays Jesse Kane, David Kane’s father and leader of a group of pirates.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film held an approval rating of 75% based on 64 reviews, with an average rating of 6.3 / 10. The website’s critical consensus read: “Aquaman swims with its entertainingly ludicrous tide, offering up CGI superhero spectacle that delivers energetic action with an emphasis on good old-fashioned fun.” It is only the second DCEU film to have a “fresh” rating on the site, the first being Wonder Woman.

Aquaman has a rating of PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language; and a runtime of 143 minutes. The action & adventure, science fiction & fantasy film was directed by James Wan, based on the DC comics character Aquaman created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris.

THIS I MUST SAY: Mary Poppins Returns is a fun film for the whole family, especially kids (of all ages). I highly recommend it, as well.
