Expressions of faith

Bishop-Elect Dr. Monterey D. Lee, Sr.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whosoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God,” John 3:16-21.

The Gospels continue the teachings Christ began. When the apostles said unto the Lord, increase our faith (Luke 17:6), this is the outpouring of Jesus’ ascension [the rising of Jesus to a higher position]—Jesus’ ascent into heaven after His resurrection. During this time, the church was established and the Gospel of salvation was preached throughout the world to make Christians of all mankind. The word ‘Christian’ comes from being a disciple of Christ.

“The Lord’s followers were called Christians,” Acts 11:26b.

The Greek word for ‘Christian’ is ‘Chris-ti-on-os,’ which comes from the two Greek words ‘Christ’ and ‘ian.’ The word ‘Christ’ means anointed and the word ‘ian’ means ‘one.’ During His life, Jesus was called the ‘Messiah’ which meant ‘the anointed one’ and we are His ‘anointed ones’ who have been anointed by His Holy Spirit to represent Him in the world. As Christians, we are to teach and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ as His disciples because we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to be disciples to live and to teach the word of God to all people.

Before Jesus ascended, He spent 40 days teaching His disciples that He is the resurrected Christ. Look at what He said to them. ‘Don’t tell anyone about me until you know me.’ The disciples argued with each other about Christ and His resurrection. In John 20:19-23, He appears to the disciples and says unto them, ‘Peace be unto you.’ Jesus showed them His hands and His side. ‘Peace be unto you. As my Father has sent Me, even I send you.’ When He had said this, He [Jesus] breathed on them. He breathed the Holy Spirit into the disciples and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit; Receive the outpouring for Spiritual growth; and live a highly effective and productive life for the kingdom of God.’ In John 20:24-29, Jesus invites Didymus, doubting Thomas, to probe the scars in His hands and side. Thomas was not there when Jesus appeared to the disciples. He declared that ‘Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe.’ Jesus appeared eight days to His disciples. He said unto Thomas to ‘reach your finger and see my hands; reach your hand and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.’ Thomas answered and said unto Him, ‘My Lord, My God.’ Jesus said unto him, ‘Thomas, because you have seen me, you believe. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet believe.’

To be a highly effective disciple, a Christian, you must know and believe that Jesus is Lord. You must be empowered to witness His word to the world. Do you have the outpouring on your life?
