Free Comic Book Day is May 4

by Cass Teague
Join the Fifteenth Doctor in a new comic book adventure with his courageous companion Ruby. Just one of dozens of comics you can pick up free on Free Comic Book Day.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is the biggest event in the comic book industry — a single day, the first Saturday in May, when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. Local comic shops are all unique, with a style and personality all its own, and each one carries a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys and related products. Local comic shops are the hubs of the comics community, where fans come together to discover new comics, make lifelong friends, and find a sense of commonality.

Many comic shops host community events such as costume contests, creator signings, drawings by guest artists, raffles and prizes, photos with costumed characters, and other fun activities. Shops have different policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will get at least one. Some in the Nashville area have been known to offer five or even ten titles per person. CALL FIRST for store hours and details on how many titles you can get. For a list of comic shops in your area, visit: comicshoplocator.com

Our friends at The Great Escape especially want you to join them at all locations of The Great Escape. Check their social media for details. In Nashville, check out one or more of these fantastic four spots: The Great Escape Charlotte Avenue Superstore, 5400 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville 37209 (Phone 615-385-2116) or Madison Superstore at 105 Gallatin Road North, Madison 37115 (Phone 615-865-8052); Rick’s Comic City in Donelson at 2710 Old Lebanon Rd, Ste 3, Nashville 37214 (615) 883-7890; and Comix City Too in Rivergate, at 1574 Gallatin Pike North, Madison 37115 (615) 868-3339.

Nashville Public Library is excited to also be a Free Comic Day Library partner this year. Stop by the Main Library, Old Hickory, Hadley Park, or Edmondson Pike Branches to pick up a free comic on May 4. Main opens at 9:00am and branches open at 10:00am. They’ll hand out comics until they run out.
