IN Love, in kindness, I write today, ON THE SAME DAY that I bring this “Word of Comfort” to the Taylor Family in this, the Final Day in the earth bound Life of GLORY TAYLOR SCRETCHEN JUBILEE.
How to reach ‘The Masses’, which requires, consciousness across Generational lines. These young folk have a FALSE HOPE in inter-generational DISconnection. Divisiveness in their naming themselves and creating a FALSE NARRATIVE around and over INTER-GENERATIONAL CONTENTEDNESS. And the question remains as OLD as TIME: “HOW to reach The MASSES?”
My column, Faith of a Mustard Seed, today is number 985. In just a few months, I will have written 1,000 columns published in the Nashville Pride. And in my writing, I have taken concern for the losses… Of the black church. I make no excuses for my blackness. God gave that to me. But a major concern that I have is that the Black Church has lost its consciousness of “Inter-Generational life.”
Glory understood. Inter- Generational Life. God gave it to her. Down in Brownsville, Tennessee.
I knew Five generations in the church of my birth. My great grandmother singing in the choir. I saw her every Sunday morning, in the Church. My grandmother who, would “Rather be a Doorkeeper in the House of God…than to dwell in” all this wickedness”. No man could hinder the fact that HE is, AND ‘I” –in all of my inter-generational womanhood, are but just one, ONLY ONE generation to which the Black Church Must Take accountability for—-In the Black Church. Glory Lived THAT MISSION.
The loss is far more blatant in Black Fraternal Life. Glory embodied THIS mission. Constance, when you delivered …clean from the hands of your Battle Creek, Michigan Chapter President Lyn Ward Gray; to the hands of your Mother; who in turn handed to Me —the Scrapbook of her Mother, Izora Bateman Ward, AX ‘51S… somebody say “Look At God!”. And I had already found at least 5 members of the Line yet alive; and everyone of them —each asked and led me to believe that “If I could just find Izora Bateman”.
That is who Glory Taylor Scretchen was, the Pride, and the Joy of Alpha Chi in her “Five Generations”. And it requires vision, way beyond you thinking you got HERE all by yourself.
I came to know Glory Taylor Scretchen in a way that —way too many us never even see in their lifetime. You will ALWAYS BE in the Center of Five Generations. Connected to her Senior Prophytes ‘64; and her Junior, Neophytes ‘65. Connecting her to her Junior, Neophytes ‘67. And her Senior Prophytes ‘68. (Oh, ya’all gon pray with me while I get to it).
And so Family, Lee Chapel, Alpha Chi, TSU Alumni, Inter-Generational Connected, some of y’all missed it while she was here. But for now? Just Know that Your inter-generational connectedness is ‘bout to get REAL for as of this day SHE is NOW your… Ancestor!
